In the early 1980s, the Vatican ordered Catholic hospitals to treat and adopt children of orphans who were left without parents.
That was in the midst of the worst famine in modern times.
The Catholic Church also worked closely with the Canadian government to help the poor.
That effort paid off when Canada came into existence in 1990.
The first Canadian children’s hospital opened in 1994.
It is now the largest pediatric hospital in the world, with over 1,000 beds and 2,600 beds of medical services.
Today, the Catholic hospitals in Canada and abroad are the largest donors to the UN Children’s Fund, which provides services for more than 200 million children around the world.
